Diary of an Indian Factory Visit: part 1

Have we just had Easter? I think I missed it!

I spent Good Friday on a plane from London to Doha, Easter Sat in Doha then Saturday night on plane to Chennai – Easter Sunday, chillin at the Madras Boat club in Chennai, Monday – work day!

Bright and early on Monday morning I get picked up by a new driver to take me to my main factory in Chennai. The unit is out near the airport so it’s at least a 45 minute journey in the Chennai rush hour.

Everyone drives as if they are in a race (although quite a slow paced race) and if the road has 3 lanes, you are guaranteed to see 5 or 6 cars abreast. They’ll all be tooting their horns too so it gets quite noisy! A toot means ‘Look out, I’m behind you’ or ‘Look out, I’m coming through’ or it can mean ‘Get OUT of my way!’ Sometimes it’s best to close your eyes and (try to) have a nap in the back of the car, otherwise you’re likely to find yourself gripping onto your seat in horror.

We’re nearly there and I don’t realise that the new driver doesn’t know where the factory is, so I let him drive right past it as the road outside looks so different since my last visit. The authorities are building a new Metro Rail system in Chennai and the landmark building opposite my factory has been demolished! I wonder where they all moved to!

I say hello to the the sample team and get to work!

Part 2 coming soon…..
