What’s in a Name?

If you see our activities on Facebook, you notice that recently I’ve decided to start name my designs. It’s so much easier to talk to people about the Billy purse or Nicky bag, than it is to discuss style 1902 or 1088.

Names or Numbers?

This got me thinking. Some companies use names all the time: think of the Kelly Bag and the Fendi Baguette and you’ll know what I’m taking about. However, some companies use primarily numbers: Pantone comes to mind.

I suppose there are just too many colours in the universe to give them all a name? Not in the days of Dewhurst Sylko ‘made in England’ cotton thread! I found these ‘vintage’ reels in my sewing box.

I just love the names. Now I know the ‘teal’ shade of my new curtains is actually ‘Gay Kingfisher’ and the other names, Flamingo, Autumn Rust, Dark Jade and Blue Green definitely conjure up a real idea of what you’re getting.

New threads 605

My other curtains are shade 450. A most disappointing colour ‘name’!

My Designs

So, we’re naming all my handbag, travel bag, wallet and purse designs, starting from now. Here’s the latest one requiring a name.

Cosmetics-bags 608

I’ve had several suggestions via Facebook, many of which I’ll use for another design but for this one I’ve chosen Pippa. Thank you Gillian Lewis for the suggestion 🙂

Sometimes friends and customers inspire the name (wasn’t that how the Kelly bag and the Birkin bag got their names?). I named this one after friend and customer Nicky Kriel. I think she has at least 2 of these in different colours. Maybe you have a favourite bag?

Nicky Bag

Why not join in via Facebook. Like Nicky, you may even get a bag named after You!
