Got caught in the rain with your suede handbag? Here’s a remedy

Rain on Suede? Not necessarily a problem

I was recently stopped in the street in Cranleigh by a customer carrying one of my suede and leather tote bags. She showed me how, after getting caught in the rain, her bag had a few little rain spots on the suede. Not a problem, I said – here’s how you clean it up.

This isn’t a quick job

First of all the bag needs to be dry. Do not attempt this if your bag is still wet from the rain. (Of course it’s best not to get it wet in the first place but sometimes you can’t help it!). So, the best way to dry the bag is to hang it up by the handles in a warm room – but don’t let it touch any heat surface.

Once it is perfectly dry, this is what you do:

Take a pan scourer – it has to be the kind you buy for non stick pans, you know, the sponge with the white nylon sratchy side to it. Using the white nylon side, rub the suede gently and you should see the rain spots magically disapppear.

This cleaning method can also be used for removing light dirt marks and generally for sprucing up the look of your suede bag.
