Last Monday was judgment day for the 2016 national student glove design competition. I was joined this year by Lynne Mead, London showroom manager for Dents, Haseena Latheef, founder of DFYNorm and several members of The Worshipful Company of Glovers, who sponsor the competition.
Entries come from fashion colleges all over the UK and this year was no exception. Students are asked to enter one of two categories:
Category 1: Design a pair of fashion gloves for Autumn Winter. The judges aren’t looking for a pretty picture when it comes to judging, there’s much more to it. We look for overall design and also evidence of research as to where the design inspiration comes from. The design needs to be practical to make and therefore the board has to include some technical sketches to show (a pattern maker) how the design is to be put together. We also want to see swatches of material and/or a description of the kind of material to be used.
Category 2: Design a pair of ‘occasion gloves’, eg for a wedding, prom, a day at the races, etc. In this category we also asked the students to suggest a retail outlet and price for their design.
And the Winner is…
Category 1: Marie Gibson from Dundee and Angus college. Marie wins £400
Category 1 runner up: Rebecca Cain from City of Liverpool college. Rebecca wins £200
Category 2 winner: Janice Smith from City of Liverpool college. She wins £400
Category 2 runner up: Ismail Laraqui from London College of Fashion wins £200
The Dents Prize of £500 for the most commercial design goes to: Kamakshi Palli from London College of Fashion
Well done to all the winners and thank you to all the students for entering. All the judges and winning students with their tutors are invited to a grand luncheon at Drapers Hall in the City of London for the prize giving in July. So, we’re all looking forward to that!
