Textile Inspirations: Ikat

Chennai Textile MarketI love looking for new fabrics. Usually, I don’t go with a certain idea in mind of what I’m looking for. In fact, if I do, then I will never be able to find it!

Fabric Market

Yesterday I decided to go to one of the street markets in Chennai that specialises in all kinds of fabrics.

It’s a small street, about 150 metres long and all along one side are lots of little stalls selling a variety of textiles. You can purchase silks and sarees, cottons and quilts.

Ikat

This is an amazing fabric that is actually dyed thread by thread before weaving. The threads have to have the different colours dyed all in the right place so that once woven the pattern appears.

I saw some amazing ikat fabrics, some with very interesting and multi colour weaves but I decided I wanted something a little plainer so in the end I choose 3. A simple black and white ikat, a vivid green with a few small splashes of colour and a vibrant red with a more pronounced pattern.

My plan for these fabrics is to make them into my handbag organiser design.
