Omaha Beach

I’ve been out again with visiting friends from Australia and as a trip to the D-Day landing beaches is a must in Normandy, that’s where we’ve been today.

Shona at Omaha BeachAny opportunity for a Bags on Tour photo is definitely on the list of things to capture 🙂

2004 memorial Omaha BeachThe 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings in 2004, was commemorated with a scuplture by French artist Anilore Banon. Called ‘Les Braves’ the graceful curves of the steel stand up to 10 metres tall and represent The Wings of Hope, Rise Freedom and the Wings Of Fraternity.

Omaha flags 1The flags along the shoreline on one side of the old memorial.

The Allied forcesThe old memorial reads ‘The Allied Forces landing on this shore which they call Omaha Beach liberate Europe June 6th 1944’

Omaha flags 2The flags to the west side of the memorial.

Landings mapAfter a long walk on Omaha beach we went to the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer. This shows the landings and movements after June 6th 1944 and is in the main entrance to the cemetery.

American cemetery 1It was a beautiful day and the setting is just so serene and peaceful with lovely views over the sea.

American cemetery 2Hopefully the photos will say it all.
