How to get a Biro mark off a coloured leather

Oh no, there’s biro on my wallet!

I’ve been a bit careless with my Apple Green Travel Wallet lately. I must have shoved it into my bag in a rush and I got a big black biro mark right on the front of it. It was so unsightly and the wallet no longer looked very smart. Luckily I was travelling that day and I had plenty of time on my hands to have a think about it.

Will it ever come off?

In the past, I have advised using a damp cloth to try and clean marks off various leathers (it does depend on the finish of the leather though!) but this time I thought, that probably won’t work. The black pen mark was so dark on the bright green leather that I thought I might make it worse if I rubbed and scrubbed.

Eureka!

You know those handy wipes that airlines give you with your food: they are the perfect cleaning cloth for taking biro marks off nice leather! I imagine that other handy wipes will do the job as well but this particular one on my Emirates flight was made from that soft mesh fabric so it was very soft and not abrasive at all.

Looking as good as new

After I removed the offending pen mark, I used the cloth to generally clean the whole travel wallet and it was soon sparkling as if it was brand new! So, not just for biro marks then!

Will it work on other materials?

I have not yet tested this cleaning method on other materials but I think it should work well on synthetic leather look and PU materials. Since I don’t use those in my designs I haven’t had the need to test these. Perhaps if you have tried it, you could let me know!

I did do a quick test on my purple leather shoulder bag (this one). I actually drew a biro mark on it (eek) to test if it would come off and YES, it did, with a fresh Emirates handy wipe.

I do use some leathers however, in my designs, that I don’t think this would work on, so it’s not the perfect remedy to any mark on any leather but it’s a place to start if you ever need a cleaning solution. I would recommend testing the wet wipe on a hidden part of the leather first incase it takes all the colour out or alters the surface glaze of your leather item.

Happy Cleaning!
