F is for Fashion Revolution

The Fashion Revolution which is quietly going on in the world, only came to my attention earlier this year.

I wanted to tell the world about my fabulous workshop in rural India and it was only when I started looking into what other design companies were doing in terms of producing ethically, that I came across the organisation Fashion Revolution.

In 2013 they launched their campaign to bring ethical production into fashion and accessories manufacturing throughout the world and in particular, looking at countries where it’s known that best practices definitely are not followed. Representatives of the organisation lobby governments to try and make changes so that one day everyone who works in this sector worldwide, is well treated, properly paid and looked after at work.

I’ve introduced several of my leather workshop staff here on my blog – and I have a lot more of them to introduce you to in future. I’m very proud of the fact that they all work just the same hours as you and I (9am to 5.30pm), have a proper lunch break and spend every evening and weekends with their families and kids.

Who Made My Clothes?

Sadly, not all workers in the fashion and textiles industry have such a nice workplace. Some are still sweatshops with forced labour over long hours – like 16+ hours a day. In some countries it’s ‘normal’ to live in dormitories at the factory and only go home to your family once or twice a year. I really don’t like that idea and so, as Fashion Revolution says, it’s important to ask ‘Who Made My Clothes’.

If more of us ask our favourite brands that question – the world will change. We can make it happen – one handbag, one tee shirt at a time… ask before you buy and make sure your purchases are ethically made.

Want to Help with the Fashion Revolution?

Fashion Revolution is a not for profit organisation and they rely on donations to help them do their work. If you are interested in helping, however little, please join me and see how you can help by clicking here. There’s lots to read on their website and lots to learn too. I hope you take a look.
