A New Year, A New Collection

I thought that the New Year might be a good time to share my story about Tatti Tailoring, my new designs for doggies, so here goes.

Once Upon A Time

Once upon a time there was a little doggy called Tatti. She was such a character – a little crazy sprocker spaniel, descended from a long line of field champion Springer spaniels (on her Mum’s side) and champion Cocker Spaniels from her Dad.

Tatti was so named, after the champagne Taittinger because she has a half sister (also in our family) called Bolly (as in Bollinger). Older Bolly was very protective over the little puppy Tatti.

Here they are at one of their first meetings.

Tatti loved to go everywhere with me and when I was working, she tried to bring all her toys into my office. Tatti was my first dog and I wasn’t at all prepared for how quickly or how much I would fall in love with her.

By the time she was 15 months old I decided I needed to add a line of Doggy Accessories into my collection and so I designed my first few prototypes of collars and leads in different styles.

Tatti’s country and working dog heritage inspired me to make my designs in Harris tweed with soft leather trim, the same materials I use for several collections of handbags, wallets and purses.

I wanted to create something a bit different but still hardwearing and practical. (If you have a spaniel, you’ll know just how much mud can get attached to them on even just a slightly wet walk, see below!)

So with the designs sent off to the workshop, I looked forward to testing them on Tatti as I’d based the prototype sizing to fit her. I planned to test for strength (she pulled a lot on the lead), for how they stand up to getting muddy and when muddy, how to clean them.

Sadly, it wasn’t to be

In May 2017 we had a heatwave and I noticed that Tatti seemed to be panting a lot. She was running around a little less than usual so we got her a cooling towel. We only walked as far as she seemed to want to go and assumed it was all to do with the heat.

At a barbeque on the bank holiday weekend at the end of the month, Tatti really wasn’t herself. She didn’t want to play with our party guests and that was really really unusual, so off to the vet we went.

Tatti was just 18 months old when she died on June 27th. The vet had her in for tests at the end of May and at the end of a very very long day, the news was the worst you can hear. The C word. She had Lymphoma in her chest cavity and after seeing the X-rays we knew the outcome wouldn’t be a good one.

We had just 4 weeks before we had to say goodbye.

So Tatti never got to test the new doggy designs. She did model a handbag or 2 though 🙂

Tatti had a short but fabulous life. At least 2 walks a day, visits to France, lots of doggy and human friends. And when my new doggy designs did arrive… I decided to name the collection after her.

Tatti Tailoring – Smart Country Accessories for Dogs.

It’s a work in progress and I plan to add in more styles and different sizes later in the year but at the moment the ‘spaniel’ size collars are in. And the leads fit any dog, obviously!

I hope you enjoyed hearing about how my Tatti Tailoring designs came about.

Another time I’ll tell you about the new puppy and how she is helping to ‘wear trial’ the Tatti Tailoring designs.
